What Are The Side Effects of Devrom® (bismuth subgallate)

Devrom® (bismuth subgallate) Side Effects

Side effects include possible temporary and harmless darkening of the stool (feces) and/or tongue. Normal color will return when not taking Devrom®

Devrom® is considered safe and effective for use as a nonprescription product. It comes in two forms: chewable tablets and capsules. Both contain 200mg bismuth subgallate.

Side effects from taking Devrom® include a temporary, but harmless, darkening of the stool and or tongue. This is common for bismuth containing products. If this does happen, it is a result of the bismuth interacting with the small amounts of sulfur in your digestive system. The combination of bismuth and sulfur forms bismuth sulfide, a black substance that exits the body through bowel movements (black stool).
